The Best

Thursday night I was reminded of a session that I had attended at the 2005 NCTE annual convention in Pittsburgh, PA. I’ve actually written about this before, but I think it bears repeating.

The speaker, when asked about why they implemented a one-to-one laptop program simply answered, “We wanted to be the best high school in the nation.” That’s an impressive attitude. During a conversation with a colleague, this came up again.  Why is it that so many of us become complacent in our classrooms?  As I look at education I think beyond my classroom.  I want my students to be members of a global community.  What happens in my class is of little consequence in the overall picture, not that it’s not important, but I think that there is more to education that what happens in individual classrooms.
